Glowing Earrings: “Eleki” Series

“Eleki” is derived from “erekiteru,” a friction-based electricity generator restored by Gennai Hiraga, a Japanese naturalist during the Edo period.
The word “erekiteru” itself is a Japanese adaptation of the Dutch (originally Latin) term “elektriciteit,” meaning electricity or electric current.
By using this name, we incorporate a sense of Japanese identity into the product.

To record & preserve

Starting in the 1990s, along with the growth of the financial and tourism industries, Hong Kong’s bustling downtown districts became adorned with distinctive neon signs. Their popularity peaked in the 2000s, but from the 2010s onward, the signs have gradually been taken down due to aging and various city beautification measures. Today, only fragments of these past scenes remain. Nevertheless, many people still associate Hong Kong—and much of Asia—with clusters of fantastical neon signs. As these man-made landscapes disappear, what can we do? The first step is to record and preserve them.
